Massage Instructions


Massage is one of the most relaxing experiences in the world. Based on touch, it is sensual without necessarily being sexual. It can straighten out the 'knots' that occur in muscles due to stress and over-work, loosening up the body and making the skin smooth and supple. Self-massage is possible on the hands and feet but you really do need to get yourself a partner. Tell them it's in the interest of medical science !

Massage technique is not the easiest thing in the world to explain adequately with words - a bit like explaining how to tie your shoelaces. Or even with pictures. A video sequence is much better but it really needs to be done on you or by you to gain a thorough understanding of the process. So start looking out for some practical aromatherapy massage classes now !

If you are serious about the subject ( which we 'amateurs' are not ), you will need to learn the names of the muscles and their position within the body.

These are the standard therapeutic massage movements :

Effleurage ( stroking )
The most relaxing of all aromatherapy movements.
 A gentle sweeping of the entire palm and fingers in
 a wide circular motion, pushing blood gently towards
the heart. A great massage for the back which will gently
 relax the muscles and tone the body.

Petrissage ( picking up, kneading )
Using the fingers and thumb, grip the muscles and
 gently lift, stretch and squeeze them. Provides a
much 'deeper' massage than effleurage.

Friction ( circular thumb pressures )
When the muscles have been relaxed, the thumb can be
used for a deep, circular movement with a medium amount of pressure.

Tapotement ( clapping, cupping, slapping )
With a cupped hand, gently 'clap' the surface of the skin
to give tone and improve blood circulation. This movement
 is rarely performed in aromatherapy but is the classic action
 of a 'Swedish' massage.

Do Not...
Massage along the spine
Massage over bruises, recent scar tissue, tender varicose veins
Massage sports injuries unless medically qualified - you could make it worse !
Massage anything that hurts
Push blood away from the heart - work with it, not against it
Massage the stomach until you get good elsewhere. A sweeping clockwise movement with peppermint ( diluted in a carrier oil ) can ease indigestion.
